2021 NMI Citizen Survey Results
From time to time, the NMIHOA has conducted surveys to better understand the opinions of the North Merritt Island residents. For this 2021 survey, included in the May issue of Courtenay Notes, NMIHOA partnered with Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency (MIRA) which is updating a community area plan. FDOH-Brevard to Schedule Appointments for Moderna COVID-19 Vaccination Series
BREVARD COUNTY, FL. — The Florida Department of Health in Brevard County (DOH-Brevard) will offer free, appointment-only COVID-19 vaccinations of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine starting Monday, January 4, 2021.
Appointments are available to:
- Those ages 65 and older
- Healthcare workers who provide direct patient care but who are not associated with a hospital system.
The appointment line, 321-454-7141, will be available to make COVID-19 vaccination appointments starting today (Tuesday, December 29, 2020) for the drive-through vaccination clinic at 2555 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera. Appointments will be scheduled beginning Monday, Jan. 4, 2021. Vaccinations will be administered Monday through Friday, between 1:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., until further notice. A driver’s license or healthcare badge is required at time of appointment.
Please review the COVID Vaccine Fact Sheet and screening questions on the COVID-19 Vaccine Screening and Consent Form prior to your appointment. If you answer ‘yes’ to any screening questions, you will need to bring a doctor’s note to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Print and complete the COVID-19 Vaccine Screening and Consent Form to bring to the appointment for more efficient service.
The Moderna COVID-19 vaccination series is two doses, given one month apart. If you receive one dose of the Moderna vaccine, you should receive a second dose of the same vaccine one month later to complete the vaccination series. After vaccination, you will be asked to park nearby for 15 minutes to be monitored for adverse reactions. Waste Management Contract For Unincorporated Brevard County: News You Can Use…
BREVARD COUNTY, FL — Following a competitive bid process, and opting to continue same-service twice-a-week solid waste collection, once-a-week recycling collection and once-a-week yard waste collection, the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners awarded Waste Management a new seven-year contract. The new contract will increase residential garbage and recycling collection from $139.70 a year to $194.28. The increase will be reflected as a separate charge on property tax bills beginning in November 2020. As part of its contract with the County, Waste Management faces fines for missed pickups on scheduled pickup days. Information on how to file a complaint or to report a missed scheduled pickup is included below.
Unincorporated Curbside Residential Collection
Brevard County’s Unincorporated areas are provided curbside collection of garbage, recycling and yard by Waste Management.
Residents of Unincorporated Brevard County have three collections per week.
Garbage is collected twice per week. Occasionally you may have excess garbage that will not fit in your cart. In such cases, the waste must be bagged (no garbage cans) and set beside the cart so as not to interfere with the arms of the autoloader.
Recycling and Yard waste are collected one day each week.
Place garbage and recycle carts; yard waste and yard waste cans within 5 feet of the curb the night before your collection day or before 6:00 a.m. Residential collection begins at 6:00 a.m. and runs through 8:00 p.m.
Special Collection Solid Waste
Any type of solid waste not reasonably capable of being place in an automated collection cart or any item not reasonably capable of being reduced in size not exceeding four (4) feet in length, twenty-four (24) inches in diameter and fifty pounds (50) in weight.
Examples include:
- household furnishings
- appliances
- electronics
- bicycles and other bulk items
- each household shall be entitled to set out up to four (4) automobile tires with or without rims for collection per year

Holiday Schedule for curbside collection of unincorporated areas
The collector shall not be required to furnish collection services on the following specified Holidays:
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Veteran’s Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
There will be no make-up days.
The Collector shall notify all customers whose normal collection day falls upon such holidays that no collection service will be provided on such day and the date of the next normal collection day at least ten (10) days and not more than thirty (30) days prior to said holiday.
Said notice shall be in the form of an advertisement in a newspaper of general circulation published within the County and published on the Collector’s website.
Brevard County residents can use any of our Disposal Facility locations during normal operational hours.

Solid Waste Collection must be completed by 8 p.m. on designated collection days. If your solid waste has not been collected by 8 p.m. and you want to file a complaint, visit: http://sites.brevardcounty.us/

The Demucking Sykes Creek or Muck Removal To N. Merritt Isl.
Back story: This de-mucking is one of the 42 projects designed to clean up the Indian River Lagoon, originally from the unanimous recommendations made in January and February 2017 by the “Save Our Indian River Lagoon Project Plan Citizen Oversight Committee” and brought to the Brevard County commissioners.
In March 2017, The Brevard County commissioners unanimously approved those projects, allocating a total of $25.87 million from the special half-cent-per-dollar sales tax to be used for lagoon cleanup efforts. Total cost of these projects which will affect areas from Mims to Micco, is $68.77 million. The balance will come from other funding sources. $10 million has been allocated for the Sykes Creek muck dredging project.
Now: The winning proposal to remove the muck (from the Kiwanis Island area) of Sykes Creek will pump 642,000 cubic yards of muck 8.5 miles through 16-20” pipes with the assistance of 5 large diesel booster pumps to a 65 acre site on E. Crisafulli Rd. on N. Merritt Isl.This site will be bermed 10-15 ft. on its’ perimeter and there is no requirement to remove any material.The pumping will be ongoing for approximately 2 years.
From Chris Cook – I briefly attended the end of a meeting in Jim Barfields office Tuesday. Mr. Barfield is solidly opposed to pumping water and Muck to the Crisafulli Rd site as recommended by the selection committee (it was the low bid). County Staff from Legal, Procurement, Environmental, Roads and Bridges and zoning were all in agreement that this was not a good thing to do for the County and NMI. Nobody was in favor of it.
What Mr. Barfield is planning to do is request that the current procurement be cancelled, and a new RFP be written up with more specific options of what would be acceptable methods and outcomes for demucking Sykes Creek. Mr. Barfield requested 3-4 alternatives be developed.
These would be reviewed by us and we could input our preferred options. – This proposal will be presented to the Commission on April 24th.
We will need folks to contact and speak with the Southern Commissioners (and Pritchet) to let them know our opinions as this whole idea could be voted down 3-2 and the current route move forward. However… County staff is doubtful that the current proposal is feasible or permitable. In any event, we need to keep pressure on the other Commissioners.

Lawn Watering Restrictions
The most current lawn watering restrictions can be found at the St. Johns Water Management site http://www.sjrwmd.com. They have changed with daylight savings time to one day per week, no more than one hour per Zone excluding the hours of 10 am to 4 pm. For odd number addresses the days are Wednesday and Saturday. For even number addresses Thursday and Sunday.
Restrictions apply to private wells and pumps, ground or surface water and water from public and private utilities.

Fertilizer Use in the Watershed
A Fertilizer Ban is governed by an ordinace which states: “No fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus shall be applied during the ban from June 1 to September 30.” Residents may be fined up to $500 for non-compliance.
The watering restrictions and fertilizer ban are measures being taken to improve the water quality of the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Johns River. This is one way everyone can take part in restoring our waterways.
